A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the head of state.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national works. They were built at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
