Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Significant Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
