The Kindness of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Secure the Role That Changed My Life

During the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a low-cost journey to Europe with a friend. Since my travel mate was considering enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had planned a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We arrived at the graduate housing, a large ten-floor structure on the UWS named International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the dining hall, where we grabbed food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with people eating there.

Adjacent to my seat was an gentleman from Iraq enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He asked me what I did for a living, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been performing experiments with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – close to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I consider applying for a position with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, returning to the canteen that night. The man from Iraq approached me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I went to the meeting – but straight off told my host that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a metropolis where anything feels possible – she responded: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his name, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the courage or self-belief to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and ask for a job. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

What's more, that gig at Columbia led me to a job in Zurich where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
